The above is the original demo for Fishing for Friends.  Originally it was sold with a custom change bag with a reel attached.  Sadly the change bag required to add the reel was discontinued.  The handling of the trick has improved with time no mater which change bag is used.  Below is the newest video demo.  Fishing for Friends has been one of the best effects I’ve ever released with multiple uses.

Fishing for Friends
By Barry Mitchell
Grab your fishing hat because this is fun, educational, and ends with a 12-footer. Show your fishing net (change bag) and inside is a cartoon fish silk. Ask a helper to hold your tackle box as you introduce the bait to go fishing for friendship. Bait is five 15” Wonder Imagery silks with designs representing a friendly nature, smile, trustworthiness, cleanliness, and money. All the bait you need to catch friends. Wait, the kids always remind you that money doesn’t attract true friends. The four remaining silks go inside the change bag and the fishing begins. Actually the waiting begins. Everyone knows fishing involves a lot of waiting. Stop waiting, you just hooked a big one. Reach into the change bag and pull out the corners of your big catch. Your helper holds one end and you hold the other as the silk is stretched out to be 12-feet long with a fish head on one end and tail on the other. In the middle are the faces of children from all over the world. You just caught a diverse group of friends. Comes with diversity message and powerful gospel presentation. Plus several routines on various subjects suggested by owners. Comes with all silks, directions, and demo DVD. Change bag not included.

Barry Mitchell Corners: We proudly use Wonder Imagery silks for all our magic. Tim Sonefelt, owner of Wonder Imagery, honors us by beginning to use our colored corners idea on his silks and naming them “Barry Mitchell Corners.” The red represents “right” and lavender represents “left” making it easy to pick up the silk right side up.

Preset: Change Bag
For best results roll the long silk around a paper mailing tube. Slowly unroll the silk and fold into an accordion design. Fold over the two ends and clip the red and lavender corners to one another with a small clip such as a cloths pin. Fold this unit in half and place inside one side of the change bag. Place the small fish silk in the other side of the change bag.

Tackle box
Choose a box or small tackle box for the five bait silks. Fold the silks so the red and lavender corners are at the top. Stack the colors from bottom to top in reverse order of the way you will present them during the effect.

Optional Ideas
Fishing hats decorated with hooks make great costume accessories for performer and helper. Gummy worms candy makes a great giveaway idea.

Basic Presentation – Friendship with Gospel or Diversity Ending
Do we have anyone who likes to go fishing?  I have a brand new magic fishing net bag and I want to try it out with you guys to do a different kind of fishing. I’ll need a helper. (Choose helper and position on performer’s left side. As an optional bit of comedy place a funny fishing hat on helper and funnier hat on yourself.)

I thought I would use my new fishing pole for a new kind of fishing. My net is empty and ready for a big catch. (Reach into bag and remove small fish silk. If using a zipper change bag you can unzip the end and push the silk through.) Oops, I was wrong. I guess there’s a picture of the last fish I caught in the net. You’ve probably heard of a Wall-Eye fish, well this is a Big-Eye fish.

I want to do some fishing for friends. (Place small fish silk aside.)  I want you to help me find the right kind of bait to use to catch a friend? Please hold my tackle box and let’s get started. (Give tackle box with silks inside to helper. Have silks folded and in order of production. From top to bottom, red, yellow, green, black, and white.)

We need bait that will help others want to become our friends. If you’ll open the tackle box we’ll see what we have. (Remove red silk from tackle box and display.) How about being friendly and caring? That’s a great start. I heard it said that the best vitamin for making friends is B-1 (be one). When we BE-come a friend to others we seem to attract them to BE our friends. We’ll use red to represent friendship and love. (Place silk in change bag.)

Let’s see what else we have in the tackle box. It’s the color yellow. (Pull out yellow silk) It’s a big smile? I like to be around people who smile. Did you know that everyone is prettier when they smile? Even my really ugly Uncle is a little more attractive when he smiles. We’ll let yellow represent a beautiful smile. (Place silk in change bag.)

Here’s a great one to help us fish for friends. It’s money. This green one can represent money. (Remove green silk from tackle box and place in change bag. Kids will stop you before you go too far. They know that friends based on money are not friends at all.)

What? You say friendship built on money doesn’t last. I guess you’re right. When you run out of money you’ll probably run out of friends too. (Pull out green silk and set aside.)

What’s next? How about keeping promises? It means a lot to me to have friends that keep their word. Did you know there are three ways to make a promise? You can give your word, which is a spoken promise. Or you can give your word with a handshake. Some people feel it means more to seal it with a handshake. Or you can sign your name on it. (Pull out black silk) If you’re willing to put ink to paper to record your promise then you’re really serious. We’ll use black to represent the trustworthiness of a promise written in ink. (Place black silk in change bag.) Being trustworthy is a great way to attract friends.

How about being clean? When I’m dirty and sweaty I don’t have a very friendly smell. It’s important to be clean and brush our teeth. Nothing can turn a potential friend away quicker than bad breath. We’ll use white to represent a little soap for good hygiene.

(Pull out white silk and place in change bag.)  I think we have some great bait here for catching a friend. We used the colors, red, yellow, black, and white. Hey, that’s all the skin colors of my best friends.

INSERT Either Gospel or Diversity version ending

Gospel version:  That reminds me of a song. Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world.

Let’s fish for friends! Ok, stand here beside me and pretend we’re fishing. (Hold change bag. Pause and act bored.) This is what you do when you’re fishing, you WAIT! And wait and wait. Sometimes you eat while you wait. That makes you gain weight.

WAIT, I think I got a big one! Would you grab that end of the fish and hold it firmly with both hands. Don’t let go. (From the second side of the change bag grab the clip holding the colored corners. Unclip and place lavender, meaning left, corner in helper’s upper hand. Place bottom of silk in helper’s other hand. Grasp red corner and move away quickly from helper allowing the streamer to flow out of the bag until all is out and silk may be displayed.)

Wow, we caught some friends. It’s the faces of friends that we might meet all over the world. (Pause for audience to see all the faces and appreciate the production.)

That’s a fish story I’ll never forget. (Fold up silk and put away.) Please give my new fishing friend a big hand. (Helper to seat.) We all can catch more friends when we act friendly, smile, become trustworthy, and keep ourselves clean and sharp.

In Matthew 4:19. Jesus said, Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. Jesus asked us to become fishers of men. That means to tell others about Jesus’ love so they might become the children of God.

OR

Matthew 4:19 (New Living Translation) Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”

Diversity Version
I enjoy meeting new friends from different backgrounds and cultures. When I meet someone with different beliefs and habits from my own I learn more about myself and about the world. And I make a new friend.

(If you perform a diversity show you can add more explanation after the helper has been seated.)

Library Fishing
Here’s a creative solution to use our Fishing for Friends silks in your summer reading shows. It uses all the silks and a change bag. The libraries will love you.
Written by Barry Mitchell and Tim Sonefelt

I was reading a great book on fishing when I had a magical idea. That’s one of the exciting things about reading; it inspires some great ideas.  I created my own magic fishing bag. With my fishing bag, I can fish for friends at the library who love to read just like me. I have a tackle box filled with bait.   I need a helper to hold my tackle box. (Choose helper and ask them to hold your tackle box open so the bait silks are accessible.)

Another one of the exciting things about the library is that it attracts a variety of people who have different interests. For example, it attracts people like me who love books about fishing. (Show fish silk and drop in change bag. For library shows its a great idea to show an example book for each section of interest.) I’ll put the fish in my bag to attract people who love fishing. You can find fishing books in the 700s section of the library.

I love books on humor and jokes. (Show yellow smile silk and drop in change bag.) You can find books on jokes in the 800s section of the library.  I love to read stories, but I really enjoy writing my own stories. Did you know there are books that can help us write better stories? You can find them in the 800s section. (Show black feather quill silk and drop in bag.)

Did you know the library has books about business and how to save money? (Show green money silk and drop in bag.) You can find books about business in the 300s and 600s section of the library.  I’ll bet you’ll never guess what soap has to do with reading. (Show white soap silk.) Did you know you can make your own soap? It’s true. You can find books about soap making in the 700s section. Speaking of soap, I love to take bubble baths. Did you know there are even books about taking baths and washing our hands? The library has books on everything! (Drop white silk in bag.)

The library even has books on LOVE! (Show red heart silk.) Are any of you in love? If you want to read love stories you can find them in fiction. (This can be a funny line to the adults if delivered properly.)  Love is not really fiction, but all those really gross romance novels my big sister reads are in that section. One kind of love that’s not fiction is our love for books and reading. (Drop red silk in bag. Switch change bag to produce long streamer.)

So if you love books and get hooked on reading, you’ll meet a whole new group of friends at the library.  Get hooked on reading.

Flu Fishing (Submitted by a customer)  By Greg Wood
Greg Wood sent us a GREAT idea he uses with our Fishing for Friends props. Below is his presentation ideas. You’ll be amazed by the creative way he has given a different and educational message to the effect.

Greg writes:  We were asked to come up with something to help re-enforce what is being taught in school to avoid a pandemic of H1N1. It seems to be such a hot topic right now. I thought I’d share it with you. Fishing For Prevention. The usual gags and jokes from Fishing for Friends are used and we added a Peachy Keen foam burger prop for a joke about catching a whopper. The kids don’t always get it but the teachers do.

Script ideas
You know when you’re fishing, you’re trying to catch something but with the flu you’re trying NOT to catch something. What can we use as bait to NOT catch something.

Smile – While a nice smile can be beautiful, there can be many germs in that smile. That’s why it is important to always cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Cough into your elbow or better yet behind your knee, or use a tissue. Throw the tissue in the garbage after you have used it and don’t put it back in your pocket.

Heart – Stay healthy, eat well, exercise, take your vitamins

Quill Pen – Stay home when sick – This is the kind of pen we used in my day to do our homework…by candlelight. When you are sick, you need to stay home from school so that you don’t spread it to others. As a matter of fact, you should stay home for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever. It’s a good idea though to get your homework sent home because we need to keep up on our work so that we don’t fall behind.

Money – Think about something like money. Most people like it. I like it, but so many people touch our money before we touch it and they may have passed germs onto the money. Peter Ender, a scientist who has studied the germs on paper money said, “The germs on money comes from our hands.” A few years ago Dr. Ender got dollar bills from people waiting to buy food at a basketball game. Seven percent of the bills showed traces of harmful bacteria. Eighty-six percent carried less harmful germs that rarely cause illness among healthy people but can be very dangerous to some people. Only seven percent of the bills had no germs. Money isn’t the only thing that is touched by a bunch of people before we touch them. And these things can also easily carry disease as well. We can’t just stop touching things but we can be careful not to touch the T part of our face, our eyes, nose, or mouth after touching things. Dr. Ender said he doesn’t worry about handling money with his bare hands because he washes his hands “dozens of times a day.” Me too, so if you want to give your money to me, I’ll take it all….

Soap – Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Follow these instructions for washing with soap and water: Wet your hands with warm running water and apply liquid soap or use clean bar soap. Lather well. Rub your hands vigorously together for at least 15 to 20 seconds. You can sing the ABC song. Scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails. Rinse well. Dry your hands with a clean or disposable towel. Use a towel to turn off the faucet. Hand sanitizers, which don’t need water, are also good too, particularly when soap and water aren’t available. If we follow these steps, hopefully, we won’t catch anything. Hey we caught something though, we caught a whole school full of healthy, happy students.

The Need to Share – Gospel Presentation (Submitted by a customer)  By Greg Wood
Do we have anyone who likes to go fishing? I’ve invented a new kind of fishing pole. It’s one part pole and one part net. I call it the fishing pole that’s one part pole and one part net. I came up with that name myself!

I thought I would use my new fishing pole for a new kind of fishing. I caught a whopper the other day. (Remove sponge hamburger from change bag.) Actually I did catch a fish. You’ve heard of a walleye? Well this is a Big Eye.  I need someone to help me do a little fishing. (Choose helper)

In Matthew 4:19 Jesus said “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men”. That means if we are following Him, then we should BE fishers of men. Vonette Bright, co-founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, once told me that if we aren’t fishing, then we aren’t following.

I want you to help me find the right kind of bait to use. Please hold my tackle box and let’s get started. (Give tackle box with silks inside to helper. Have silks folded and in order of production. From top to bottom, red, yellow, green, black, and white.)

We need bait that will help us in our fishing. If you’ll open the tackle box we’ll see what we have.

RED HEART
First, we need a heart for the lost. If we do not have a real heart for the lost, for people that do not know Jesus, then we need to ask Jesus to give us a heart for them. Jesus wants them ALL to know Him and we should want that too.

YELLOW SMILE
We need to be friends with those who do not know Jesus personally. It is important that we are kind to EVERYONE. Jesus said “But here is what I tell you. Love your enemies. Pray for those who hurt you.” People will always be more friendly towards us if we friendly toward them. If we are friends with them, then it is easy to let them know about OUR friend Jesus.

BLACK PEN
We can rely on the promises of Jesus. These promises are written in the Bible. They never change. Ps 145 tells us “The Lord is faithful and will keep all of his promises.” Jesus has promised that He loves us and will never leave us and He wants us to tell others of His love.

GREEN MONEY
Yes, sharing Jesus could cost us money. While there is no cost for the Gospel, the price has already been paid by Jesus Himself, we may still need to invest some money in sharing Jesus. We may have to buy a Bible to give to our friends. We may have to buy tickets to an event where our friends can hear the Gospel clearly presented. We also need to support the missionaries who share Jesus with people all over the world.

WHITE SOAP
Some people think that it is only those who are good that can find Jesus. They think that people need to clean up their act before we can share about Jesus’ love for them. That is simply not true. Remember we don’t need to clean the fish before we catch them.

OK, we have Red, Yellow, Black and Green. Hey that reminds of a song. Red and Yellow, Black and Green, Jesus thinks you’re really keen.

Let’s go fishing! Ok, stand here beside me and pretend we’re fishing. This is what you do when you’re fishing, you stand, hold the pole and WAIT! And wait and wait. Sometimes you eat while you wait. That means you gain weight while you wait.  WAIT, I think I got a big one! Would you grab that end of the fish and hold it firmly with both hands. Don’t let go.  Wow, we caught something. It’s the faces of children from all over the world who now know Jesus because we shared with them.  That’s a fish story I’ll never forget. (Fold up silk and put away.) Please give my new fishing friend a big hand.  Jesus asked us to become fishers of men. That means to tell others about Jesus’ love so they might become the children of God.

Prayer Bag  By Darren Casteel
Darren Casteel shared this wonderful presentation to teach prayer with some of the silks in our Fishing for Friends effect. Darren says this is the basic outline of what he does with the bait silks. He does not use the fish or children’s faces silk. He says it gets a great response.

(A change bag or other production prop may be used. Or simply hold up the silks as you discuss them.) This is my prayer bag. It reminders me of how we pray and what we pray.

(Produce heart silk.) We need to pray with a right heart. The Bible says the prayers of a righteous person are powerful and effective. (James 5:16)

(Produce money silk. Kids will usually say we can’t pray for money.) Wait, we can pray for money when praying from the right heart. The Bible shares that we do not have because we don’t ask. (James 4:2) When we ask for something like paying a bill or money that has a good purpose it’s certainly okay.

(Produce smile silk. Turn silk upside down to make a frown.) We pray for people to be unhappy, right? (The kids will scream to turn it over. Follow with all the popular “turn it around” gags.) We pray that people have the joy of the Lord.

(Produce quill silk.) Did you know that God keeps his promises? This quill reminds me of the strength of a promise written in ink. I pray that I will also keep my promises and become a trustworthy person.

(Produce soap silk.) We can also pray to be clean. The Bible says, if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to cleanse us from our sin. (I John 1:9)
